Part V: Moving On

Part V: Moving On

"What happened, grandma? What happened to everyone?" Katy demanded to know.

"What happened to Widgit's staff? Where did it go? Did she ever come back?" Bobby was out of breath, trying to squeeze in all his questions at once.

Grandma leaned back in her rocking chair and laughed softly.

"Oh my, children, how you do go on! That was a long, long time ago. What makes you think I'd remember?" she asked, her bright gray eyes dancing.

"But doesn't the book say?" Katy asked, indicating the bound journal that now rested in her grandmother's lap.

"No, dear. The journal was left behind on the boat, and Mistress La Fitz went off to California, leaving it behind."

"But you were there, right? You remember, don't you?" Bobby persisted.

"Oh, I remember many things...."

"So tell us!" Bobby and Katy yelled at once.

Grandma laughed, then gave in to their demands.

"Oh, all right. I'll tell you what I remember. But you have to keep in mind, I didn't go to California. I was one of the ones who stayed behind."

The children's eyes grew wide.

"What happened?" Bobby asked, again.

"Well, let me see. Emerald gave birth to triplets, and they were all boys, and they all looked like Roberto -- which surprised everyone except Wickeddoll, who knew what was going on all the time. And Jannie gave birth to a beautiful little girl, who grew up to have a will of iron and a stubborn streak -- well, let's just say she was 'bad to the bone'. Jannie named her Lisa, and she became an outlaw.

"Luis stayed with Rosalita and Stone, and the three of them had many more children. And...."

"Did Widgit come back? Did she?" Katy asked.

Grandma nodded.

"Oh, yes. She came back, but she never found her staff. Still, she went looking for them all, and I think she was responsible for what happened to Lisa."

"And what about you, grandma?" Bobby asked.

"What about me? I stayed in New Orleans and married a man I fell madly in love with, and we had a beautiful baby girl, who grew up to be your mommy."

"But you weren't in the book," said Katy, a puzzled look on her face. "You're name isn't in there, anywhere."

"That's because we never used our real names," Grandma explained. "We all had names we'd picked out, so no one ever knew who we really were."

"I bet you were Aphrodite!" Bobby said, grinning.

"No," Grandma said.

"Telamarine?" asked Katy.

Grandma shook her head again.

"Then who?" they both demanded to know.

Grandma Livy smiled sweetly.

"You see, children, I had the biggest secret of all, because everyone thought I was a boy," she said. "Back then, they called me Oliver."
